Angel Lu, now a junior in the College of Arts & Sciences, was named the 2023 Florence Moog Scholar. This merit-based scholarship, awarded in May, recognizes a sophomore in Arts & Sciences who is preparing for a career in science and shows excellence in both a STEM field and one area outside of science, technology, engineering, or mathematics.
Lu is majoring in biology and minoring in medical humanities. She is a member of the lab of Hrishikesh S. Kulkarni, MD, where she is working on a research project focusing on lung-derived complement proteins and their roles in modulating acute lung injury. With support from the Department of Biology, she created a mentoring program that helps students get prepared to find and begin undergraduate research. She also created the Gift of Music program, which provides performances — both in person and online — for senior centers and hospitals. The program has already featured more than 200 musicians and 55 performances.
The Florence Moog Scholarship is named for Dr. Florence Moog, a biology professor until her retirement in 1984. Moog was named the Charles Rebstock Professor in 1974 and served as chair of the Department of Biology from 1975 to 1977. She is remembered for her keen mind, wit, and warmth. The scholarship provides half-tuition for the recipient's junior and senior years.
