Amanda Carey, a teaching professor of Spanish and assistant director of undergraduate studies in Spanish, has been appointed the Dean’s Fellow for Educational Initiatives, effective Nov. 1.
In her new role, Carey will continue to oversee the Arts & Sciences’ Summer Online Pilot project, a program she supported while serving as College Faculty Fellow. Additionally, she will assist Arts & Sciences’ Workday implementation team to help assess project requirements, oversee an effective communication plan, and ensure the school’s on-schedule progress. She will serve on the Student Sunrise Communications Advisory Committee and the Sunrise/A&S playbook team for implementation planning.
Since joining the WashU in 2002, Carey has taught beginning, intermediate, and advanced Spanish classes, as well as linguistics classes. She created and currently teaches online Spanish courses for WashU Continuing & Professional Studies, where she supported faculty as an online learning specialist. Within the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures, she has been the course coordinator for elementary, intermediate, and advanced Spanish curriculum. A former chair of the Arts & Sciences Curriculum Committee and a former member of the Undergraduate Education Advisory Committee, she currently serves as the assistant director of undergraduate studies for Spanish. In 2023, she was recognized as one of the most innovative teachers in St. Louis by the Excellence in Teaching Awards program hosted by Emerson Electric.
“I am tremendously impressed with Amanda's deep pedagogical expertise and experience working with our faculty,” said Feng Sheng Hu, the Richard G. Engelsmann Dean of Arts & Sciences. “She will be an invaluable resource to our community during the Workday transition, and I am extremely grateful for her willingness to take on this important leadership role.”
