Dorothy, a publishing project has announced two new titles for 2022 – Revenge of the Scapegoat by Caren Beilin and New and Selected Stories by Cristina Rivera Garza. The St. Louis-based publisher was co-founded by Danielle Dutton, associate professor of English, and Martin Riker, senior lecturer in English, in 2010. Each year, the award-winning feminist press publishes two new books simultaneously, often pairing books from very different aesthetic traditions.
Last fall, Dorothy entered into a partnership with the New York Review of Books. To celebrate their first release since the partnership was announced, Dutton will moderate a Zoom panel discussion April 18 co-hosted by four independent bookstores from across the country: Brazos Bookstore in Houston, Third Place Books in Portland, Community Bookstore in Brooklyn, and Harvard Bookstore in Cambridge.
The independent press also provides Washington University students with opportunities to gain experience in the literary publishing industry. Each year, Riker and Dutton select two graduate students in the creative writing program to serve as interns. Riker has also developed courses in publishing for undergraduate students, and in fall 2022 will launch a two-course sequence in the English department that will be cross-listed with Olin School of Business. The new publishing course sequence will include visits from professionals throughout the publishing industry to take students through the book publishing process.
