Lamenting Intervals: Landscapes of the Body

Lamenting Intervals: Metamorphosis is a forthcoming presentation by the internationally recognized Polish intermedia artist Monika Weiss who will discuss her current cycle of works in sound, movement, drawing and sculpture, collectively titled Metamorphosis, on view from August 24 - December 15, 2024 at Laumeier Sculpture Park, where Monika Weiss is this year’s Visiting Artist in Residence. Several Performing Arts Department students are participating in the artist performative installations at Botanical Garden on September 14th and at Laumeier Park on October 10th. About Monika Weiss

Monika Weiss is a New York-based Polish artist and Professor, Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts, as well as Affiliate Professor of Performing Arts. Celebrated feminist art historian Griselda Pollock writes that “Monika Weiss’s works have long solicited our attention to historical events: forgotten, remembered, not yet mourned, or immemorial, so that we experience their condition affectively through a musically choreographed image of time: time is both her frame and a medium.”  Weiss work has been presented in over 100 exhibitions around the world at venues such as Museum of Memory and Human Rights in Santiago, Chile, A.I.R. Gallery in New York, Frost Art Museum in Miami, Stavros Niarchos Art Foundation in Athens, and Centre of Contemporary Art Ujazdowski Castle in Warsaw. Her intermedia practice and has been reviewed by The New York Times, ARTnews, Art in America, Art Nexus, Arte Al Dia, Sculpture Magazine, Prague Post, and numerous others.  International publications include also a chapter in Guy Brett’s The Crossing of Innumerable Paths: Essays on Art (London: Ridinghouse, 2019) and a bi-lingual monograph Monika Weiss. Nirbhaya (Centre of Polish Sculpture in Orońsko, 2021) with texts by Griselda Pollock (Leeds University) and Mark McDonald (The Metropolitan Museum of Art), among others. As part of The Met series Artists on Artworks, a 30 min. film with Monika Weiss premiered in 2021. ­Recipient of numerous awards, in 2023 Monika Weiss was awarded the New York State Council on the Arts individual artist grant in support of her forthcoming long term public project Nirbhaya, planned for Dag Hammarskjold Plaza near United Nations in New York.
