Women and Equality in the New Testament

Lance Jenott, Senior Lecturer WashU Classics

Engage with WashU Classics at Ladue Chapel

Topic: Women and Equality in the New Testament
Speaker: Lance Jenott, Senior Lecturer in Classics
Location: Leutwiler Room, Ladue Chapel

Join Senior Lecturer Lance Jenott for an open, thought-provoking conversation series hosted by Ladue Chapel’s Adult Education program. This session explores the diverse—and sometimes conflicting—views on women’s equality in the New Testament, tracing the historical roots of a debate that continues to shape Christian communities today.

About the Presentation
We’ll begin with the Gospel accounts of Easter Sunday and the question of which disciples first encountered the risen Jesus. From there, we’ll examine Paul’s letters, including Galatians 3:28 (“there is neither male nor female in Christ”), and consider what these texts reveal about real women in early Christian missions—figures like Priscilla, Phoebe, and Junia. Finally, we’ll discuss reactions to women’s roles in ministry, such as the directive in 1 Timothy: “I do not permit a woman to teach or have authority over a man.”

About the Speaker
Dr. Jenott earned his PhD in the History of Religions from Princeton University and specializes in ancient Christianity, early Christian texts, and classical languages. He has held research appointments at the University of Oslo and has been a faculty member in WashU’s Department of Classics since 2017.
