All Students, All Levels
The Department of Music at Washington University is dedicated to undergraduate instruction for all students at all levels. Music majors, music minors, and other interested students share the same introductory classes, permitting easy interaction between majors and non-majors. We seek students who recognize music as a serious activity and consider the study of music an indispensable part of their lives, regardless of what career they have in mind.
Combined with the virtues of a small, nationally prominent private university, the Department of Music offers both a liberal arts program leading to a Bachelor of Arts degree, and a pre-professional program leading to a Bachelor of Music degree. Minors are offered with concentrations in jazz studies and classical music.
Practical Foundation, Interdisciplinary Strength
We offer the M.A. and Ph.D. in Music, with concentrations in Musicology and Music Theory. We are a supportive community of faculty and graduate students located on a beautiful campus in a musically-rich city. With a low student-to-faculty ratio, individual attention is a hallmark of our department. Our graduates currently hold positions in research universities, conservatories, liberal arts colleges and engineering schools, as well as arts institutions outside academia. We share an integrated view of musical scholarship: graduate coursework exposes all students to advanced study in musicology, ethnomusicology, and theory. Washington University offers many opportunities for interdisciplinary study, with certificate programs in American Culture Studies, Women and Gender Studies, and Film and Media Studies.
