Steven Frankel’s research spans the fields of low-dimensional topology, dynamics, and geometric group theory.
After earning his doctorate from the University of Cambridge, Frankel joined the mathematics department at Yale University. He has also served as a member of the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, where he received the Eric and Wendy Schmidt Fellowship.
Frankel studies the relationships between the shape of a space, its symmetries, and the kinds of dynamical systems it supports. He is interested in interested in geometric topology and dynamics, especially in combination: 3-manifolds, foliations, and hyperbolic geometry, quasigeodesic and pseudo-Anosov flows, partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms, generalized pseudo-Anosov maps, groups acting on circles and trees, etc. His work is supported by the National Science Foundation.
