Hanebrink was employed by Washington University from 1969–2002, first as assistant dean and then as associate dean in the College of Arts & Sciences. After his retirement, he helped coordinate the university’s sesquicentennial celebrations. Afterwards, he remained involved with the university, serving as president of the Society of Professors Emeriti and as an English-language tutor for international graduate students.
He was also active on the board of the Historical Society of University City, where he served as recording secretary for a number of years. He and Annaliesa took advantage of all St. Louis had to offer, avidly attending lectures, exhibitions, plays, operas, and concerts. Throughout his life, Wayne was a voracious reader, a habit he shared with Annaliesa. He was keenly interested in politics and loved to discuss current events. A gentle soul, his sly wit and keen sense of humor will be missed by all those who knew him.
Obituary submitted by the Hanebrink family. A visition will be held at Lupton Chapel, University City, Tuesday, Aug. 2 from 4–7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Missouri Botanical Garden, where Wayne loved to walk.
