Chris A. Eng, assistant professor of English, has won the 2023 Early Career Achievement Award from the Association for Asian American Studies (AAAS). The award recognizes a junior scholar who has made valuable contributions to the field of Asian American and Pacific Islander studies early in their career.
Eng teaches courses on U.S. ethnic literatures and queer of color critique. His book project, “Extravagant Camp: The Queer Abjection of Asian American Camps” is currently under review with a university press. The GL/Q Caucus of the Modern Language Association and the Queer/Trans Caucus of the American Studies Association gave his 2020 article “Apprehending the ‘Angry Ethnic Fag’” an honorable mention nod for the Crompton-Noll Article Prize. His work has also been recognized by the Institute for Citizens & Scholars through a Career Enhancement Fellowship. Eng’s graduate teaching and advising span the fields of American studies, critical ethnic studies, cultural studies, gender and sexuality studies, performance studies, as well as theorizations of affect, diaspora, empire, and contemporary American literature.
