mosAIcs & brAIns : the computational aesthetics of mosaic art

The Incubator for Transdisciplinary Futures at Washington University in St. Louis invites you to join an exciting lineup of leaders in the field to address the synergy between art, aesthetics, and AI when applied to contemporary mosaic art. The symposium will be hosted on the beautiful Danforth Campus of Washington University in St. Louis.

The symposium's objective is to encourage the fusion of (i) contemporary mosaic art, (ii) established computational aesthetics paradigms, and (iii) novel opportunities arising from computational creativity. We invite participants to envision links between their present research and one or more of the three listed scholarly directions.

  • David Crandall, Professor of Computer Science at Indiana University and Director of the Luddy Center for Artificial Intelligence
  • Ahmed Elgammal, Professor of Computer Science at Rutgers University and Founding Director of the Art and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory at Rutgers
  • Sue Giannotti, Founder of Mosaic Opus Studio in St. Louis and Director of the Chicago Mosaic School Certification Program
  • Sam Goree, Assistant Professor of Computer Science at Stonehill College
  • Kiyohito (Kyo) Iigaya, Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Columbia University and Affiliate of both the Center for Theoretical Neuroscience and the Zuckerman Institute
  • Sonia King, Founding member & Past-President of the Society of American Mosaic Artists and Past-Vice President of the Associazione Internazionale Mosaicisti Contemporanei (AIMC)
  • Brady Roberts, Postdoctoral scholar in the Brain Bridge Lab at the University of Chicago
  • Gabrielle Starr, Professor of English and Neuroscience and President of Pomona College
  • Edward Vessel, Assistant Professor of Psychology at the City College of New York (CCNY) and Secretary General of the International Association for Empirical Aesthetics (IAEA)
  • Brendan Weekes, Professor Emeritus of Education and past Chair of Communication Science, University of Hong Kong
