Global Studies
In the Global Studies program, you are encouraged to cross the traditional borders of academic disciplines in order to develop a broader understanding of our world. Within six concentrations, you can take classes in anthropology, economics, history, languages and literatures, political science, among other disciplines to question global processes and explore the rich diversity of other cultures. As a major in the program, you have the opportunity to study abroad, conduct research and achieve proficiency in a modern language. You learn from experts in both the humanities and social sciences who will help you learn the theory and vocabulary you need to engage in key international issues across different world regions.
The program offers a major with six available concentrations: development, Eurasian studies, European studies, global Asias, global cultural studies, and international affairs. Study abroad is an integral part of the Global Studies undergraduate experience, and the program works closely with Overseas Programs to give students the opportunity to acquire the broad cultural knowledge, languages, and practical skills necessary to participate fully in a global society.
Global Studies fosters an active academic and social community for undergraduate students. Many of our students enjoy participating in Sigma Iota Rho, the Global Studies Honorary Society, a group committed to furthering international awareness. This group of undergraduate students seeks to promote an academic, social and professional community for any Washington University students interested in global issues. The chapter has presented town hall events on salient issues, organized public service projects, hosted student research conferences and maintained an international human rights film festival.
