Hannah McCall, a rising junior in the College of Arts & Sciences, has been named as the 2018 Florence Moog Scholar. This merit-based scholarship recognizes one sophomore in Arts & Sciences who is preparing for a career in science and shows excellence in a STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) field as well as one other area distinct from STEM.
As a major in physics, McCall began research in summer and fall 2017 analyzing a gamma-ray binary star system, and during winter break she presented her findings at the Conference for Undergraduate Women in Physics at Iowa State University and the American Astronomical Society Meeting in Washington, D.C. In addition, McCall is pursuing minors in mathematics and women, gender, and sexuality studies.
McCall also is a member of Washington University’s varsity softball team. As a pitcher and outfielder in 2018, she appeared in nine games and was recognized as Academic All-UAA.
The Florence Moog Scholarship is named for Dr. Florence Moog. She served as a Biology professor until her retirement in 1984 and was named Charles Rebstock Professor in 1974 and chair of the Department of Biology from 1975 to 1977. She is remembered as much for her keen mind as her wit and warmth. The scholarship provides half-tuition for the junior and senior years.
