Professor Kastor is professor and director of undergraduate studies in the History Department.  He also serves as associate vice dean of research in Arts & Sciences, where he works with faculty to support the research mission in the humanities, humanistic social sciences, and creative practice.

Professor Kastor studies the history of politics, policymaking, and culture in the United States. He focuses much of his work on the half-century following American independence.  He is also a scholar of the American Presidency, from its origins in the eighteenth century through its current manifestation in the present day.  He teaches a wide range of undergraduate courses and trains graduate students in American history.  He is also an actively engaged public historian, writing for media outlets and collaborating with educational groups and cultural institutions.

He is the author or editor of eight books as well as numerous articles and essays.  He recently launched Creating a Federal Government, 1789-1829.  This landmark digital project provides the first comprehensive understanding of the federal workforce in its formative years.  Reconstructing the career of over 38,000 federal employees in over 2,000 georeferenced locations, this project quite literally rewrites out understanding of how the founding generation understood governance and the meaning of the Constitution.

Creating a Federal Government continues Kastor’s commitment to interdisciplinary inquiry by bridging the gap between history and political science, engaging questions in American political development, presidential history, and institutional behavior.  This project also reflects over three decades of work in digital history.

In addition to his scholarly work, Professor Kastor engages public audiences in various ways.

Two of his courses have been featured on C-SPAN’s Lectures in History.  He has been a regular guest on St. Louis Public Radio.  He has been interviewed about the history of American politics by numerous media organizations and has written for outlets including The Washington Post, The Huffington Post, The Conversation, and Fortune.

Professor Kastor’s teaching includes a variety of professional development programs for federal, state, and local agencies.  He has taught in Washington University’s Brookings Executive Education program, a partnership with the Brookings Institution, which provides ongoing career development for emerging leaders in the federal government.  He has also conducted educational programming for the St. Louis Public Schools, the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency, and the Air War College.

An active contributor to numerous local organizations, he currently serves as chair of the board of trustees at the Missouri Historical Society.
