On Monday, May 2, students from the classes of 2022 and 2023 gathered in the Women's Building Formal Lounge to celebrate the induction of a new member class into the Washington University in St. Louis chapter of Phi Beta Kappa.
Phi Beta Kappa is the nation's oldest honorary society, founded in 1776 at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. Widely considered the most prestigious honorary for the liberal arts in the United States, it now has chapters at approximately 290 institutions of higher learning. The Washington University Chapter was established in 1914 as the Beta Chapter in the state of Missouri.
Phi Beta Kappa recognizes the exceptional achievement of writers and scholars to show how the curiosity and creativity cultivated by a liberal arts and sciences education are essential to making the most of life's experiences.
Seniors and juniors from Arts & Sciences are nominated once a year by a selection committee made up of Phi Beta Kappa faculty and/or staff members representing the humanities, natural sciences, and social sciences.
Vice Dean of undergraduate affairs Erin McGlothlin served as the faculty speaker for the event and was also the honorary inductee. The senior officers for the Washington University chapter are president, Vincent B. Sherry, Jr., treasurer, Leonard S. Green and secretary, Dirk Killen.
